Hubby has a very tiny note on how to make a Sloppy Joe from scratch. He has it hanging in the inside panel where we keep spices and some cooking utensils and has been there for years. I decided to try it one day with ground turkey instead of ground beef and it came out really good. Then just the other day, I made it again but adding extra vegetable that we had in the refrigerator.
Here is the list of what you need in case you want to try it:
- 1.25 lb ground turkey
- 2 tbs brown sugar
- 1/2 cup minced onions
- 2 tubes minced celery
- 2 tbs vinegar
- 1 cup tomato ketchup
- 1 cup finely chopped green bell pepper
- 1/2 cup finely chopped red bell pepper
- cinnamon to taste
- salt (optional) I did not use it.
- Brown meat and onions in a non stick pan.
- Add all ingredients and cover for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally under medium heat.
- Uncover and continue cooking on low heat for another 15 minutes or until most of the liquid part. disappeared.
