Sloppy Joe

Hubby has a very tiny note on how to make a Sloppy Joe from scratch. He has it hanging in the inside panel where we keep spices and some cooking utensils and has been there for years. I decided to try it one day with ground turkey instead of ground beef and it came out really good. Then just the other day, I made it again but adding extra vegetable that we had in the refrigerator.

This is how it looked like with the plain bun. We could have used the bigger bun but in the name of "portion size" we opted to use the small ones. Sometimes, I like it with just like what is shown in the picture, so does hubby. But there are times when we both like to use sliced Swiss cheese and tomatoes. I know that there are a lot of Sloppy Joe packet that are available in the market these days, but making it from scratch is better in the sense that we have the total control of the ingredients we want to put in our food.

Then I decided to put veggies to get a fuller feeling the next time I served it to hubby. We both liked it.

Here is the list of what you need in case you want to try it:
  • 1.25 lb ground turkey
  • 2 tbs brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup minced onions
  • 2 tubes minced celery
  • 2 tbs vinegar
  • 1 cup tomato ketchup
  • 1 cup finely chopped green bell pepper
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped red bell pepper
  • cinnamon to taste
  • salt (optional) I did not use it.
Here is how to do it:
  • Brown meat and onions in a non stick pan.
  • Add all ingredients and cover for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally under medium heat.
  • Uncover and continue cooking on low heat for another 15 minutes or until most of the liquid part. disappeared.
This serves at least six people. Enjoy!
